Minted for just three years from 1913-1915, the German 20 Mark Wilhelm II Military gold coins are among the most highly sought after and coveted, yet still affordable, of the historic German rarities.  Despite their brief mintage, 3.4 million total coins were struck, which remains a relatively small mintage when compared to other contemporaries, yet just plentiful enough that the coins still trade at reasonable premiums.  Given their unique design – Wilhelm II depicted in full military attire – these coins were typically held in private collections and rarely circulated.  Accordingly, when they do surface, they are usually in a beautiful Brilliant Uncirculated ‘Proof-like’ condition – just as those offered here are.

As the last gold coins minted in Germany prior to its disastrous hyper-inflationary period, the German 20 Mark Wilhelm II Military represent a sobering lesson in the inherest risk of fiat currencies and the enduring value of gold.  Less than a decade after these coins were struck, it required 726,000,000,000 paper marks to buy what could have been purchased for just one mark in 1914.  By 1923, each of these German 20 Mark Wilhelm II Military gold coins provided the same purchasing power as an extraordinary 14,520,000,000,000 (fourteen-and-a-half trillion!) paper marks
