The German 20 Mark Hamburg gold coins feature the distinctive Hamburg coat of arms on the obverse, one of the more intricate and stunning designs among all of historic European gold coinage. The German 20 Mark Hamburg coins of the pictured design were struck on behalf of the German Empire from 1877 until World War I. A small design change from a small eagle to a large eagle on the reverse was made in 1893. The later Hamburg marks featured in this offer were of extremely limited mintages, with a total of just 4.3 million struck from 1893-1913. In general, German 20 Mark Hamburg rarely surface, and typically do so only in very limited quantities. Often centerpieces of private European coin collections, they do often survive well, and can typically be found in low grade uncirculated condition when available.
Historical Note: The city of Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany. It is located on the Elbe river about 75 miles from the north sea and to this day, is one of the largest ports in Europe. It was founded by Charlemagne in the 9th century. Hamburg was an independent and sovereign city-state prior to the unification of Germany in 1871.
