ONLY 15 Remain

Our April Flash special offer is quite extraordinary if we do say so ourselves.  Only once in our 53-year history we’ve had the opportunity offer these extremely rare and unique Sovereigns.  Available today only because an estate liquidated its 100-coin position acquired during our once (and only) offer of these same coins back in 2019.

Quoting Scott Thompson, PCGS World Coin Department Manager:

“The sovereigns from 1855 to 1870 are among the most important and valuable series in Australian numismatics. These were the first coins struck by the Royal Mint in Sydney that was established in 1855 as the first branch of the British Royal Mint.  These sovereigns have a distinctive ‘Sydney Mint’ reverse. This is the only time the Royal Mint permitted a design unique to a branch mint.”

All dated 1870, the design is unlike any other minted Sovereign, featuring a young Victoria with a sprig of banksia (a type of wildflower unique to Australia) in her hair and the ‘Sydney Mint’ reverse just mentioned.  With a total mintage of just 1.22 million, 1870 is also the fourth rarest date by mintage in the series (1857-1870) and the last year the coins were minted prior to the change to the standard British design of the era.  The World Gold Coin Catalog suggest a retail price of $500-$550 in similar condition (lightly circulated VF/XF condition – actual image of a coin from the group is pictured above), and we were unable to locate any comparable offer anywhere Offered at a modest premium above common British sovereigns and with only 100 coins available, these are sure to go quickly.

Additional Commentary:

The British Sovereign Queen Victoria Young Head gold coin, struck at Australian mints such as Sydney and Melbourne between 1871 and 1887, is a classic piece of numismatic and investment history. The obverse displays the elegant “Young Head” portrait of Queen Victoria—her hair bound in a bun—crafted by renowned engraver William Wyon. On the reverse is Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic image of St. George slaying the dragon, a hallmark of the sovereign series.

Composition: 22-karat gold (91.67% pure)

Weight: 7.98g (0.2354 troy ounces)

Diameter: 22.05mm

Legal tender with a face value of £1

Australian-issue Young Head sovereigns were produced during a time of Victorian expansion and are prized for their combination of historical significance, exquisite design, and intrinsic gold value. Mints can be identified by marks below the portrait—“S” for Sydney and “M” for Melbourne—and coins may feature either the St. George reverse (most years) or the shield reverse (early years only).

These sovereigns are highly sought after by collectors and investors for their blend of heritage, craftsmanship, and gold content, embodying both British and Australian histories in a single coin.
