Minted in Paris during the French protectorate of Tunisia, the Tunisian 20 Francs is one of the scarcest Latin Monetary Union coins, (.1867 oz gold) on par with rarely seen issues like the Swiss Confederatio and Finland 20 Markaa. We don’t put a ton of stock in NGC’s world gold coin valuations, but their over three times melt/gold value (in XF condition!) assigned to these coins certainly attests to their relative scarcity. Add to it that all of these coins are in beautiful high-end AU/UNC/BU condition, retaining the full detail of their intricate and striking design, while displaying stunning mirror-like brilliance and original mint luster. These coins feature a classic French reverse with the date and denomination centered on the coin within a circle. Surrounding the circle is a beautiful woven wreath design unique to the Tunisian coin. The obverse, written in Arabic, states: “Mohammed Al Hadi Regent of Tunisia 20 Francs Year 1322,” flanked by sprigs.
Just 900,000 total Tunisian 20 Francs coins were minted in 1903 and 1904 during Al Hadi’s service as Regent. Far fewer have survived into the modern era with the majority melted and recast into later French coin issues. We are making these Tunisian 20 Francs coins available at per ounce rates comparable to modern bullion fractional coinage, and on par with more common European coin issues like Sovereigns and Swiss Francs. These are a must have for our clients looking to expand their heirloom world gold coin positions, as well as great accumulation opportunity for those interested in efficiently adding fractional historical bullion positions of interest to their portfolio.
