In 1911, mintages of $20 St. Gaudens overall were much lower than other surrounding years with just 197,200 coins struck in Philadelphia, and 846,500 struck in Denver.  Survival rates reflect a similar story of scarcity, with the survival rate in uncirculated (MS60 and higher) for the 1911 estimated at just 8150 from the Philadelphia mint and 46,500 from the Denver mint.  Drilling down further, collector’s will note the extreme scarcity of a 1911 Philadelphia minted coin in MS65 or better, with just 175 believed to have survived in high states of preservation.  As such, 1911 Philadelphia minted coins are very scarce overall, but especially in higher grades.

Per PCGS population figures, 1100 1911 dated coins total have achieved the grade MS63, and just 786 are known to have survived in better condition.  The overall scarcity rating among all St. Gaudens for the 1911 in grade MS60 or better is 28/54, meaning it is considered the 28th rarest date, with 26 dates more common.  Like all coins from this cache, this example is highly lustrous and well struck, and retains the entirety of it’s beautiful original orange peel die coloring, and is an exceptional specimen for it’s grade.  This coin is a terrific opportunity for a gold investor to secure substantive added rarity at an historically favorable premium.

The PCGS suggested retail price for this coin is $3750.  Offered here for $3125.
