Speaking broadly, $20 St. Gaudens struck in the main U.S. mint in Philadelphia from 1909 to 1915 are scarcer overall than those minted in the branch mints of Denver of San Francisco.  In 1910, mintages in Philadelphia and Denver were dwarfed by those in San Francisco, with just 482,000 coins struck in Philadelphia and 429,000 struck in Denver, while 2,128,000 struck in San Francisco.  Ironically, survival rates tell a very different story, with the survival rate in uncirculated (MS60 and higher) for the 1910 Philadelphia minted coins estimated at just 24,000 total coins, versus 21,650 1910-D, and 15,350 1910-S.  Drilling down further, collector’s will note the scarcity of each coin above MS65, with both San Francisco and Philadelphia minted coins surviving in very low rates (375 Philadelphia and 725 SF) compared to Denver minted coins (2750 estimated) in gem condition.  All this adds up to a reality that high conditioned Philadelphia minted 1910 dated $20 St. Gaudens in high condition are extremely hard to locate.

Per PCGS population figures, 4369 1910 dated coins total have achieved the grade MS63, and 2453 are known to have survived in better condition.  The overall scarcity rating among all St. Gaudens for the 1910 in grade MS60 or better is 38/54.  Like all coins from this cache, this example is highly lustrous and well struck, and retains the entirety of it’s beautiful original orange peel die coloring, and is an exceptional specimen for it’s grade.  This coin was graded roughly 15 years ago, which is notable, because at the time PCGS had not yet adopted its plus (+) grading system, so specimens are often considered stronger within a fixed numerical grade than present grading standards.  1910 dated $20 St. Gaudens are a terrific opportunity for gold investors to secure substantive added rarity at minimal premiums – premiums that are actually well below historical norms for even common dated coinage in the same grade.
