In 1914, 453,000 $20 St. Gaudens were struck in Denver as compared to 1,498,000 struck in San Francisco and just 95,250 coins struck in Philadelphia. The survival rate in uncirculated (MS60 and higher) for the 1914 Denver minted coins is estimated at 25,650 coins, versus 85,850 1914-S and just 6850 total coins from Philadelphia. The 1914-D’s higher overall survival rate in higher condition makes it one of the generally more affordable options to acquire a Denver mint $20 St. Gaudens. Similar to a 1911-D, though slightly scarcer overall.
Per PCGS population figures, 29 1914-D dated coins total have achieved the grade MS63+, and 4988 are known to have survived in better condition. The overall scarcity rating among all St. Gaudens for the 1914-D in grade MS60 or better is 39/54. Like all coins from this cache, this example is highly lustrous and well struck, and retains the entirety of it’s beautiful original orange peel die coloring, and is an exceptional specimen for it’s grade. This coin is a terrific opportunity for a gold investor to secure the added rarity and distinction of a mint-marked $20 St. Gaudens at an historically favorable premium, and a comparatively low premium to historic norms for even common dated coinage.
The PCGS suggested retail price for this coin is $3000. Offered here for $2800.
