In 1913, mintages of $20 St. Gaudens overall remained lower compared to surrounding years with 393,500 struck in Denver, 168,780 struck in Philadelphia and a mere 34,000 in San Francisco. Survival rates reflect a similar story of overall scarcity, with the survival rate in uncirculated (MS60 and higher) for the 1913 dated coins estimated at 14,250 from the Denver mint, 8500 from the Philadelphia mint and just 3000 from San Francisco. All 1913 dated coins are significant conditional rarities, with just 37 known 1913-S’s in 65 or better, and 27 1913’s. Though the Denver minted 1913 dated coins are the most common for that year in the same grade with about 1000 known, 1913-D’s are overall notably scarcer than other era Denver minted coins like the 1911-D and 1914-D.
Per PCGS population figures, 1730 1913-D dated coins total have achieved the grade MS64, with only 544 known to have survived in better condition. The overall scarcity rating among all St. Gaudens for the 1913-D in grade MS60 or better is 31/54. Like all coins from this cache, this example is highly lustrous and well struck, and retains the entirety of it’s beautiful original orange peel die coloring, and is an exceptional specimen for it’s grade. This coin is a terrific opportunity for a gold investor to secure notable scarcity at an historically favorable premium, and a comparatively low premium to historic norms for even common dated coinage.
