In 1912, mintages of $20 St. Gaudens overall were the lowest of any pre-WWI year, with just 149,750 coins struck in Philadelphia alone and no coins struck in either San Francisco or Denver. Survival rates reflect a similar story of true scarcity, with the survival rate in uncirculated (MS60 and higher) for the 1912 estimated at just 9000 coins. Drilling down further, collector’s will note the extreme scarcity of a 1912 Philadelphia minted coin in MS65 or better, with just 82 believed to have survived in high states of preservation. As such, 1912 Philadelphia minted coins are very scarce overall, but especially in higher grades.
Per PCGS population figures, 1484 1912 dated coins total have achieved the grade MS63, and just 631 are known to have survived in better condition. The overall scarcity rating among all St. Gaudens for the 1912 in grade MS60 or better is 29/54. Like all coins from this cache, this example is highly lustrous and well struck, and retains the entirety of it’s beautiful original orange peel die coloring, and is an exceptional specimen for it’s grade. It is the only 1912 dated coin from this collection. This coin is a terrific opportunity for a gold investor to secure substantive added rarity at an historically favorable premium.
