In 1909, mintages of $20 St. Gaudens were much lower in Philadelphia and Denver, with 161,215 coins struck in Philadelphia, and 52,500 struck in Denver, than in San Francisco (2,775,000 coins). Due to significant introduction into general circulation, overall survival rates tell a much different story of scarcity, with the survival rate in uncirculated (MS60 and higher) for the 1909 estimated at just 4500 from the Philadelphia mint, 1200 from the Denver mint, and 23,500 from the San Francisco mint. Drilling down further, collectors will note the extreme scarcity of a 19o9 Philadelphia and Denver minted coins in MS65 or better, with just 50 and 27 believed to have survived in high states of preservation respectively. As such, any 1909 Philadelphia minted $20 St. Gaudens are very scarce overall, but especially in higher grades.
Per PCGS population figures, 1909 dated coins 223 total have achieved the grade MS61, and just 1545 are known to have survived in better condition. The overall scarcity rating among all St. Gaudens for the 1911 in grade MS60 or better is 23/54, meaning it is considered the 23rd rarest date, with 31 dates more common. This coin was graded roughly 15 years ago, which is notable, because at the time PCGS had not yet adopted its plus (+) grading system, so specimens are often considered stronger within a fixed numerical grade than present grading standards. Like all coins from this cache, this example is very pleasing overall for it’s grade, with strong luster and a sharp strike. This coin is a terrific opportunity for a gold investor to secure substantive added rarity at an historically favorable premium.
The PCGS suggested retail price for this coin is $3500. Offered here for $2900.
