The 1908 $20 St. Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, graded NGC MS66, is a remarkable piece from the Wells Fargo Nevada Hoard. Designed by the renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this coin is part of the “No Motto” series, which lacks the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Struck in 1908, it features a rich greenish-gold color with occasional rose or orange highlights, and a soft frosty or satiny sheen. The Wells Fargo Hoard, discovered in the 1990s, is known for its exceptional quality, making this MS66 coin a highly desirable collectible for numismatists.
The Wells Fargo Hoard refers to an incredible discovery of over 15,000 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens “No Motto” gold double eagle coins in the 1990s. These coins were originally designated as a World War I debt payment in 1917 but remained hidden and untouched for over 80 years until their rediscovery. The hoard was temporarily stored in a Wells Fargo bank vault in Nevada, hence its name, before being acquired by dealer Ron Gillio in 1996. The discovery of the Wells Fargo Hoard transformed the 1908 No Motto issue from a relatively undesirable date to one containing some of the finest known examples of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series.
