The United States $5 Indian Gold Coin, also known as the Half Eagle, is a historic and collectible piece minted from 1908 to 1929. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this coin features a unique incuse design, where the main elements are recessed into the coin’s surface rather than raised.
The obverse displays a left-facing Native American chief wearing a full-feathered headdress, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies, with the word “LIBERTY” inscribed above and the minting year below. The reverse showcases a proud eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with inscriptions including “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, each coin contains approximately 0.2419 troy ounces of pure gold, weighs 8.36 grams, and has a diameter of 21.6 mm. The $5 Indian Gold Coin was minted at several locations, including Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Despite initial criticism for its design, the coin is now highly valued by collectors for its historical significance and aesthetic appeal.
