When the special interests of financial sector lobbyists are mixed in adequate proportions with a largely self-interested Congress, we shouldn't be surprised that the outcome is often a legislative snafu rather than meaningful reform. The latest financial crisis served up a bitter indictment of the state-of-the-art of the financial sector. It additionally revealed the state of government regulation to be an ineffective bureaucratic veneer devoid of substance. The prospects ahead remain bleak, but thus is our own choice made all the easier -- that is, we'll steer clear of this economic trainwreck with a redoubled commitment to diversify our portfolios with physical gold.
