| Franz Joseph I was crowned emperor of Austria in 1848 at the age of 18. Aside from the re-unification of Hungary and Austria under a dual monarchy empire in 1867, Franz Joseph's political impact on history was far less memorable than the highly documented personal tragedies he endured during his reign. His brother Maximillian was executed by a Mexican firing squad after a failed attempt as emperor of Mexico in 1867. Joseph's only son, prince Rudolph, committed suicide in 1889, and his bother, Karl Ludwig, died of sickness in 1896. Two years later, an Italian anarchist assassinated his wife, Elisabeth, while in Geneva. In his lifetime, Franz Joseph lost nearly the whole of his immediate family, ultimately leaving the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Joseph's nephew, as heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Though he, too, could not escape the ill fate befallen the Hapsburg family. The Archduke's assassination in the summer of 1914 in Sarajevo, a result of Balkan dissatisfaction with Austrian rule, is widely held as the first in a domino-like series of events that led to World War I. |
